The weather is changing. Let a new season of weather complaints begin! Truthfully, it’s not hot yet. We are just adjusting. Enjoy it! Put your Garden Hat On! Spring is in full swing and many moons will come and go before the paint peeling heat rolls in.
This is one of my favorite times of the year. For those of us who work in the nursery business, it’s busy. Spring is in full swing and the plants that were planted months ago are flushing and blooming. It’s exciting to walk out and survey acres and acres of blooming plants.
Some of the best perennial plant choices are just now coming available. I know. Every week I go out and look at the crops to see how far they’ve come and admire the work that has gone into growing them.
Just like people, some gardens may have had a little reaction to the recent new warmth. We just need time to adjust; a new hat perhaps. I’ve adjusted my home watering to accommodate the drying effects of wind and warmer temperatures. I’ve cut back or removed winter annuals to accommodate the summer annuals. Of course we always make room for something new. My husband has the stiff back to prove how hard I’ve been working.
If you are preparing for get-togethers at your home toward the end of the month or early June you will especially want to consider getting the new flowers in the ground soon. This is especially true if your new plants aren’t in full bloom yet. Expecting an established-look the day of an event is not reasonable.
This is also a good time to (click here –> dead head ) to remove spent blooms on roses and perennials so they will soon have blooms again. (For roses, I like this link. It’s closest to what I do in my own garden. click here –> Dead Heading Roses) Fertilize with a blooming fertilizer. (Higher in Phosphorus than Nitrogen) Do this periodically and you should have blooms all summer long. FYI, too much nitrogen will cause a lot of growth and greening but reduced to little bloom.
