My husband and I have been on vacation for a couple of weeks and I took a respite from blogging as well…tried to stay “unconnected” although tough these days, even at a remote lakeside setting.

We were having grand-baby withdrawls and so were delighted when our children asked us to keep him over night just recently (for the first time). My daughter-in-law was very helpful and wrote down all the particulars and “routine”. Things were going just fine…until bedtime.

That’s when this child from outer-space appeared and I really thought was possessed! Man, was he MAD! I had given him the last “scheduled” feeding of the evening and he had fallen asleep in my arms and had the appearance of an angel just laying there so peaceful. I lifted him up to give him a burp, and boom, he was startled awake and for the next hour would NOT give in to even a yawn or slower blink.

“Opa” finally said, “Ok, I’m just going to put him in the crib and if he cries, he cries”. Oh that he did!. “Oma” couldn’t take it anymore and my husband warned me not to go to his rescue. But I just had to! I was at least a bit sneaky about it…I approached the crib so he could not see my face, I slipped my hand down into the area, placed the “pacey” in his mouth and after about five minutes of squirming and whimpering, he fell fast asleep for the next 8.5 hours. Yeah!

Morning came and we had a good day, with a few outbursts here and there that were easily de-escalated and I was a little shamefully glad when my son and daughter-in-law said they would not need us to have him for  a second night as originally planned.

Whew! This babysitting thing takes a toll when you’ve not had little ones around in years and  I suppose that’s why grandparents get to do most of the “fun” stuff and then give them back when they start whaling! Hehe.
