My Son’s First Father’s Day

When my son and daughter-in-law made the decision that they wanted to have a baby, they talked very deeply about the commitment, sacrifice, and devotion it would take to have a little one. They were ready to have their lives changed forever.

When our grandson was about a month old, we offered to keep him for the evening and even overnight so they could have date night…it was all set, we readied our home to have him stay an extended period, and waited for them to arrive. About 30 minutes before the agreed upon time, they called and said they couldn’t bare to leave him and didn’t go through with their big plans. I thought it was so precious and knew that someday they will definitely need a reprieve and will be able to go through with leaving him.

It is so awesome seeing our son be a father. He is head-over-heels in love with that “little man” as he often calls him. My son works full-time 12 hour shifts and on his days off he pretty much does everything for his son and will not let my daughter-in-law do too much. He feeds him, changes him, baths him, and almost can’t get enough of him…it’s so amazing seeing him interact with our grandson and desiring to be close to him and be such a positive influence.

As grandparents, we certainly have laments about not spending enough time with our own children, so it’s a delight seeing their priorities.

I hope all you Dads out there had a great Father’s Day and can spend time with your children as often as possible. It’s never too late!
